What 50RH Means for the People Who Live Here
If your building uses 50RH, here is exactly what the sensor in your unit does, what it physically cannot do, and what happens to the data.
What the Sensor Measures
Each 50RH device is an environmental sensor built around the Bosch BME688 chip. Every 15 minutes it records five signals about the air in the room:
- Temperature — ambient room temperature
- Relative humidity — the moisture level in the air — the core mold-risk signal
- Air pressure — barometric pressure, used to understand ventilation
- VOCs — total volatile organic compounds in the air, an indoor air quality signal
- Air quality indicators — an overall indoor air quality score and an estimated CO₂-equivalent value derived from the gas sensor
Alongside those readings, the device reports the mold-risk score it computes on-chip from those same signals, plus its own health: WiFi signal strength and battery level. That is the complete list of what leaves the unit.
What It Physically Cannot Do
The hardware has no microphone, no camera, and no motion sensor. It cannot record sound, images, video, movement, or location. These are not features we turned off — the components simply do not exist on the device.
No Personal Information
50RH stores readings against a unit number — for example, “Unit 204” — and nothing else. Our system has no field for a resident's name, phone number, email address, or any other personal detail, and residents never have accounts with us. We could not look up a person if we wanted to; the data model doesn't contain people.
Who Can See the Data
- Your property management team — authorized staff see unit-level readings and risk scores in their dashboard so they can act on moisture problems early, before they become mold.
- 50RH— we operate the service and use readings to run and improve risk detection. We never sell data, and we don't run ads.
Alerts go to property management, not to any outside party. Nobody else has access.
Can the Readings Tell When Someone Is Home?
Everyday life does show up in environmental data — a hot shower raises humidity, cleaning products raise VOC levels. That is precisely what makes the readings useful for catching moisture problems. But readings are point-in-time snapshots taken every 15 minutes, analyzed for one purpose: scoring mold and air-quality risk. 50RH does not build occupancy, activity, or behavior profiles, and the dashboard presents risk scores and trends — not a log of what happened in a unit.
How the Data Is Stored
- Readings are encrypted in transit from the sensor to our cloud (TLS, via AWS IoT Core)
- Data is stored on US-based cloud infrastructure — 50RH operates in the United States only
- Historical readings are retained to power trend analysis; property owners can request deletion at any time

For Property Managers: Telling Your Residents
We recommend disclosing environmental monitoring to residents plainly — it builds trust, and residents benefit directly from mold prevention. Sample language you can adapt for a lease addendum or move-in notice:
“This unit is equipped with an environmental sensor that measures temperature, humidity, air pressure, and air quality every 15 minutes to detect conditions that can lead to mold. The sensor contains no microphone or camera and records no sound, images, or movement. Readings are linked to the unit number only — no personal information is collected.
